The ginger whinger (c) PA DJ Chris Evans has told how he flew to South — but got cold feet and came straight back home again

The Radio 2 star travelled 6,000 miles to raise funds for children’s hospitals in Cape Town with TV chef Aldo Zilli.

“When I got there I realised it was the last place on earth I wanted to be, so after an hour’s drinking in a bar, I picked up my case and headed back to the airport.”

An unabashed Chris said: “I must hold a record for the least amount of time in a country thousands of miles away before coming back to good old Blighty.”

Let’s leave aside the wasted CO2, and the fact that the charity was probably pretty upset that their headline star turned tail and left almost before he arrived. Let’s cut the ginger whinger some slack.

We’ve all had holiday disasters, gone to places where the second you get off the plane you know you’ve made a mistake. Some destinations – Marrakech, for instance – are just such a culture shock that lots of tourists have a little panic once they’re let loose in the medina.

But most people who have that moment of fear don’t have the funds to get straight back on the plane and have to just stick it out. I’m willing to bet that nine times out of 10 they end up having a wonderful time, and that momentary panic at being immersed in a completely foreign world is actually the first thing they tell people about when they get home.

What were you so scared of, Chris? Vineyards? Whales? Flat-topped mountains? My Mum went to South and she had a lovely time!

Or am I wrong? Share your holiday disasters and let us know about holidays you wish you’d never taken…
