Amusement parks themed for Halloween

HalloweenEighty-one percent of amusement parks will hold Halloween or fall-themed events this year, according to the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions.

But fewer than half of them offered Halloween Attractions 15 years ago, illustrating the tremendous growth in recreation related to the holiday, according to an informal survey conducted by IAAPA among more than 100 park managers.

Some parks haunted walks and other fun for thrill-seekers, complete with zombies and bloody axemen. Other places are geared for kiddies, with pumpkin-decorating and hay rides. And some cities have haunted houses created from abandoned prisons and other creepy places using Hollywood-style special effects.

Here is information on some of these Attractions, compiled by the IAAPA. Check with destinations for exact times and dates; many are only open Thursday-Saturday or Friday-Sunday through Halloween.

Mindanao Tourism Council’ Byahe Ta Mindanao kicks off

The Mindanao Council (MTC) and Davao Council of and Tours and Allied Agencies (DCTTAA) have agreed to Mindanao as one to local and global tourists through its brainchild project dubbed “Byahe Ta Mindanao”.

MTC and DCTTAA consisting of various tour operators kicked off ‘Biyahe Ta Mindanao” last Oct. 2-4 with a familiarization tour together with members of the media to Northern Mindanao particularly in Bukidnon, Cagayan de Oro, Oroquieta, Ozamis and Dapitan.

The group had its first stop in Seagull Valley in Budda, Bukidnon with its overwhelming scenery and freezing weather and proceeded to Gloria’s Fantasyland, the so-called Disneyland of the Philippines, Dakak Resort, Rivercruise Dining in Dampa Marine Park and the historical place of Jose Rizal’s exile in Dapitan City.

The group on its way back to Davao explored Cagayan de Oro and visited some of its tourist sites such as the Gardens of Malasag, Museum of Three Tribes and Makahambus Cave.

Speaking at a press conference while on Rivercruise Dining in Dampa sa Dapitan Marine Park Saturday, MTC president Araceli Ayuste said partnership with media, and tour operators and investors with the assistance of government is key to creating a comprehensive package to Mindanao’s key destinations to potential travelers.

Through partnership, it would be easier to come up with tour packages and solve problems that serve as hindrances to tourists in visiting preferred destinations, she said.

MTC chair Dindo Ilagan, also vice president of Gloria’s Fantasyland owned by former Zamboanga del Norte Congressman Romeo Jalosjos, said MTC will focus on looking into infrastructure problems since it is the priority of the travelers.

He said the concept of “Biyahe Ta Mindanao” is for Mindanaons to first explore the potential hubs in their own island and later become as first hand promoters of the island’s destinations to the rest of the country and the world.

“Tayo muna magbiyahe sa Mindanao to see for ourselves how peaceful it is, and the other countries will follow,” he said.

DCTTAA president Chato Aranda, for her part, said they are partnering with MTC to help and support Mindanao projects to boost Mindanao’s industry.

She said the organization is coming up with a tour package designed for local and foreign travelers in visiting Gloria’s Fantasyland, Dakak Resort, Rivercruise Dining, and Rizal Shrine.

She also said an overnight stay of the tourists at the Gardens of Malasag and Museum of Three Tribes will be included in the package.

She said tour operators are also eyeing to affordable tour packages for students who are on education field trips and leisure trips.

Aranda said the cooperation and support of and tour operators are vital to pump prime Mindanao’s key destinations.

The second leg of “Byahe Ta Mindanao” will be a road trip to General Santos City and Siargao Island, the surfing hub of the Philippines, and other key destinations in this part of Mindanao and parts of Southern and Western Mindanao on the third leg.

On its second phase “Byahe Ta Mindanao” will be traveling to various parts of the country to strengthen partnerships with sectors at the level and later to other countries purposely to Mindanao.

Ayuste said that “Byahe Ta Mindanao” is purely a private sector-led project, although it is also getting some assistance from the government sector.

Running on selected dates until November 1, the event is suitable for those who want to participate in Halloween without the scare factor. Kids will love seeing their favorite characters in special costumes for the season. The Fright Fest at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey is now in its 18th year. It promises thrills, chills and screams. SAN FRANCISCO’S “DISNEYLAND” – THE NEW WALT DISNEY FAMILY MUSEUM

Walt Disney Family Museum, San Francisco has arrived in San Francisco, but not as a theme park. It’s the Walt Family Museum that opened just two days ago, celebrating Mr. Walt ’s vision and artistry. It’s the real “ land” taking over three historic Presidio buildings renovated to include a screening room, learning center, museum shop, cafe, and ten galleries showing original sketches of classic characters. There are also Walt’s Academy Awards, videos of Mr. explaining the origins of his characters, and one particularly interesting display of a model of what Walt imagined Disneyland would look like.
Getting to know this American legend is a nostalgic trip through early-to-mid 20th century pop culture, not just of the United States, but of the world. This is therefore a museum not just for children, but perhaps especially for adults. It also hosts classes, special family programs, and screens -related films. Tickets are $20 for adults, $12.50 for children from 6 to 17 years of age, and free for those under 6. You can get them through the museum’s website www.waltdisney.org.

-See the complete San Francisco city guide.
